The 214.63m long Yeongdo Grand Bridge completed on Nov. 23, 1934 was the first bridge connecting an island with the mainland in Busan. 31.30m on the mainland side was a bascule bridge. And the bridge was built at the cost of 3.6 million won. As the bascule part was lifted 7 times a day, many people swarmed to see this and it became a famous tourist attraction.
When Busan was the temporary capital during the Korean War, Yeongdo Grand Bridge was a stage of the refugees' sad stories. At that time a Yeongdo native singer, Hyeon In sang a song called 'Don’t lose courage, Geumseon' which moved Busan Citizens to tears.
But because of the population increase and traffic jam, the bascule-type Yeongdo Grand Bridge stopped the lifting function on Sep. 1, 1966. To relieve the traffic congestion caused by shipbuilding companies, the Busan Grand Bridge was constructed. And the fame of the Yeongdo Grand Bridge is fading.
