The Dongsam-dong Shell Midden, located at 750-1, Dongsam-dong, Yeongdo-gu on the right side of the entrance of Korea Maritime University was excavated in 1930 by a Japanese scholar. It is designated as Historic Site No. 266 on Jul. 26, 1979. Since then, several excavations were carried by Korean and foreign scholars.
In the 1999 excavation, a jar coffin and structure traces were discovered, which proved that this site is one of the oldest New Stone Age relics in Asia.
In 2002, a museum was constructed to educate students by recreating the living environment of the time and excavation site, and providing information on the creation, distribution, and characteristics of shell middens. (Tel 051-403-1193)
