Theory of Hangmaek

According to the Feng Shi theory (theory of geomancy and topography), Yeongdo is Hangmaek. From ancient times, Yeongdo was thick with the forest and the grass fit for the ranch. The name Cheonghak came from green trees and the name Cheonghak-dong probably originated from this.
According to the Feng Shi theory, Yeongdo seen from Haeundae is a crane flying south.
In the ancient times, Dongsam-dong and Arch Island were connected by land, and allegedly, Arch Island was the left wing of a crane and Namhang-dong the right wing of a crane and The summit of Bongnaesan was a nest of a crane. And the theory of Hangmaek originated from this.

The Jangsa Bawi (Superman Rock) lies beyond the Arirang Pass of Bongnaesan Legend has it that a 2.7m-tall Superman lived in a remote mountain of Yeongdo. He came down to the village for meals everyday and he ate about 18 liter of rice at a time.
One day, a huge shadow ghost appeared in the village and kidnapped a virgin and the residents were in horror by the frequent incidents. The Superman fought against the shadow ghost offshore and died.
The shadow was a python. The residents buried the Superman at a sunny side of Mt. Bongnae and afterward the tomb turned into a big rock.

Arirang Hill

Arirang Pass is a path from the last stop of Yuhan Bus to Cheonghak-dong. This was the only path connecting Dongsam-dong and Sinseon-dong before the road was built in Yeongdo. In ancient times, the Pass was thick with the forest and curves and people passed the Pass crying and it was named Arirang Pass. People still talk about women braving the robbers to Busan Market through this pass to sell fish.

Jonaegi Sweet Potato

Jonaegi Sweet Potato was one of special products of Yeongdo.
It is grown in the loess field in Cheonghak-dong and Dongsam-dong. This very tiny sweet potato is reddish and sweet as a ripe chestnut. During the Japanese Colonial Rule, many Japanese came to Yeongdo for this sweet potato.
